Convert PDF to LaTeX (.tex)

LaTeX or TikZ output

No sign-up required

Compilable LaTeX Source

Headings, lists and tables become clean .tex that compiles in Overleaf or pdflatex.

Vector Graphics to TikZ

Charts and diagrams become editable TikZ paths, not flattened screenshots.

Encrypted and Secure

Files are encrypted with 256-bit TLS and deleted 15 minutes after your task.

Three Steps to Editable LaTeX

Convert a PDF to LaTeX or TikZ in three steps, no software, no account needed.

1

Upload your PDF

Drag and drop or select your PDF up to 100MB free, 1GB on Pro and 5GB on Premium.

2

Choose LaTeX or TikZ

Pick an editable LaTeX document, or TikZ pages that keep the exact original layout.

3

Download Instantly

Get a .tex file, or a .zip with images, ready for Overleaf. Deleted after 15 min.

Get Your Document Back into LaTeX.

A PDF is the end of the LaTeX pipeline, not the start. Here is where recovering editable .tex and TikZ source saves you from retyping it.

Recover Lost Thesis Source

Lost the .tex behind your thesis or paper? Rebuild editable source from the final PDF instead of retyping every chapter.

Reuse Figures in Papers

Turn a vector chart or diagram from a PDF into TikZ code you can restyle to match your paper's fonts and colours.

Update Lecture Notes

Convert old lecture notes, handouts and problem sets into LaTeX so you can edit, renumber and recompile them each term.

Move Documents to Overleaf

Bring PDF reports, CVs and articles into Overleaf as .tex, then collaborate and track changes like any LaTeX project.

Rebuild Tables

Simple PDF tables come out as tabular environments, ready to edit instead of copying numbers across cell by cell.

Keep Exact Page Layouts

TikZ mode reproduces each page as positioned text and graphics, ideal for posters, slides, forms and one-page designs.

What converts to LaTeX

FynePDF reads the text and the vector drawing of every page, then writes them back out as LaTeX. Text becomes sections, paragraphs and lists, drawings become TikZ paths, and embedded images are saved alongside, so you get source you can edit and recompile, not a screenshot of the page.

Text and structure

Headings, paragraphs, lists and simple tables become LaTeX sections, itemize and tabular.

Drawings become TikZ

Lines, curves, fills and colours in charts and diagrams convert to editable TikZ paths.

Equations and scans

Equations arrive as text to retype in math mode. Scanned pages need OCR PDF first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the PDF to LaTeX conversion?

FynePDF reads both the text and the vector drawing of every page, so the result is real LaTeX source rather than a picture of the page. In LaTeX document mode, headings, paragraphs, bullet and numbered lists and simple tables become sections, itemize and tabular environments, and charts or diagrams become TikZ figures. TikZ mode keeps the exact layout, placing every line of text, shape and image where it was on the original page.

What is the difference between LaTeX and TikZ output?

LaTeX document mode gives you an editable article: text flows into sections and paragraphs you can rewrite, and figures sit between them as TikZ pictures. TikZ mode turns each page into one tikzpicture that matches the original layout, which suits posters, slides, forms and single-page designs. Pick LaTeX to edit the writing and TikZ to keep the design.

Can it convert equations and math formulas?

Partly. Greek letters and common symbols such as ≤, → and ∑ are converted to their LaTeX commands, so they compile correctly. Complete equations with fractions, integrals and alignment come through as text rather than math markup, so you will need to retype those in math mode. The surrounding text, headings and figures still convert normally.

Will the .tex file compile in Overleaf?

Yes. The output compiles with pdflatex, lualatex or xelatex and only needs standard packages such as tikz and graphicx, which Overleaf, TeX Live and MiKTeX all include. Upload the .tex file, or the whole .zip when your PDF contains images, as a new Overleaf project and click Recompile. Use lualatex or xelatex for documents in non-Latin scripts.

Why do I get a .zip instead of a .tex file?

When your PDF contains photos or other raster images, FynePDF saves them in an images folder next to main.tex and packages both as a .zip, so every image reference in the LaTeX works straight away. PDFs with only text and vector graphics download as a single .tex file.

Can I convert scanned or image-based PDFs to LaTeX?

Run OCR PDF first to add a text layer, then convert. A scanned PDF is a picture of text, so without OCR the converter can only place the page image in your document. Once OCR'd, the recognised text converts into editable LaTeX like any other PDF.

Is the PDF to LaTeX tool free to use online?

Yes, FynePDF's PDF to LaTeX tool is free with no sign-up required. Free accounts can convert files up to 100MB, with up to 10 tasks and 600MB of processing a day. Professional at $7/month raises this to 1GB, and Premium to 5GB.

Is it safe to use PDF to LaTeX on FynePDF? Are my files secure?

Yes. FynePDF encrypts every upload with 256-bit TLS and permanently deletes your PDF and the converted LaTeX 15 minutes after your task completes. Processing is automated, FynePDF staff do not read your document, and files are never used to train AI models. Signed-in users can save results to a private library instead, where they stay until deleted.

Can I use the PDF to LaTeX tool on Mac, Windows, or mobile?

Yes. FynePDF works directly from your browser, so it works on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android with no installation. Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge are all supported.
