What is a Qualified Electronic Signature (QES) and when do I need one?

A Qualified Electronic Signature is the highest tier of electronic signature under EU eIDAS regulation. It uses a certificate issued by a qualified trust service provider and is tied to a verified identity, which is why it carries the same legal effect as a handwritten signature in every EU member state. You need one where the law requires a specific signature form certain property transactions, some corporate filings, and public-sector submissions. For ordinary commercial contracts, a standard electronic signature is normally sufficient.

Is an electronic signature legally binding?

Yes, in most jurisdictions. In the United States, the ESIGN Act and UETA give electronic signatures the same legal standing as handwritten ones for most agreements. In the EU, eIDAS prevents a signature being denied legal effect solely because it's electronic. Some document types are excluded wills, certain family law matters, and some property transfers and requirements vary by country, so check locally for high-value or regulated agreements.

Can I add initials, dates and checkmarks as well as a signature?
