Kobo, Nook, Apple Books and Google Play Books all open EPUB natively. Converting to MOBI is no longer necessary, and Amazon stopped accepting MOBI files in 2022.

Does the conversion preserve images, tables, and footnotes?

Images are carried into the EPUB and resized for e-reader screens. Scanned PDFs need OCR first, without a text layer there's nothing to reflow, and you'll get an empty ebook.

Why does my EPUB look badly formatted?

Usually the source. Multi-column academic papers become a single column with the columns interleaved, since there's no reliable way to know which column continues where. Headers, footers and page numbers can end up scattered through the text, because in the PDF they're just words positioned near the edge of a page. Scanned documents produce nothing readable at all without OCR. Text-heavy, digitally created, single-column PDFs give the cleanest result.

Can I convert the EPUB back to PDF?
