Check page 4. Did I format the journal article correctly?
AII found a formatting error. In APA 7th edition, the journal title and volume number must be italicized, and the issue number goes in parentheses. Here is the fix:

Frequently Asked Questions

Which citation styles are supported?

APA 7th edition is what the agent is built around and where it's strongest, in-text formats, reference list structure, hanging indents, DOI formatting, author ordering and alphabetisation. It also works with MLA, Chicago and Harvard; tell it which style you need at the start of the session. Whichever you use, the cross-checking is the same: every in-text citation matched against your reference list and every list entry matched back.

Will uploading my paper trigger a plagiarism checker like Turnitin?

File transfers use TLS encryption. AI features may send document content to the Google Gemini API to generate the output you request. Documents are not used to train AI models. Temporary AI files are deleted within 24 hours of upload; files saved to your Library follow the Library storage policy. Read the Privacy Policy for details.

Can it check a reference I'm not sure about?

Paste the full reference into the chat and the agent will check it against your chosen style and tell you what's wrong with it, missing italics, wrong author order, a DOI formatted as a URL, a date in the wrong position. What it won't do is look a source up for you: if you paste a bare URL, DOI or ISBN, there's nothing in the document for it to read, and it's built never to invent an author or a publication year it can't see. Get the details from the source itself, paste the full reference, and it'll format and check it.

Can I use the Citation Checker for free?

Yes. Read a document overview without signing in, then try one AI answer by typing a question, choosing a suggestion, or running the analysis. Each new upload gets one answer, shared across tools and agents. A paid plan unlocks further interactions within its AI allowance.

How secure are my files and data?

How do I check that every citation in my paper has a reference?

Upload the paper and ask for it directly, "which in-text citations are missing from my reference list?" The agent works through every parenthetical citation, matches each against your bibliography, and reports the ones with no entry. Then ask the reverse: "which references aren't cited anywhere?" Orphaned entries are less serious but markers notice them, and they usually mean you cut a paragraph and forgot the source. Doing both passes takes about a minute and catches the errors that cost marks.

Will it invent a source or a page number?

No, and it's built specifically not to. The agent works only from the document you upload and is instructed never to fabricate a source, an author, a date or a publication detail it can't see. If a reference is incomplete, it tells you what's missing rather than filling the gap, which is the opposite of what a general-purpose chatbot does when asked for a citation. Fabricated references are the most common way AI gets students into trouble with a bibliography, and avoiding it is the point of using a tool built for this rather than a chat window.

Is an uncited quotation plagiarism?

Usually treated as such, yes and it's the most common way honest work gets flagged. Direct quotation without an attached citation, or paraphrasing so close to the original that it reproduces the structure and most of the wording, both count under most institutions' definitions regardless of intent. The agent flags quoted or closely-tracked passages that don't have a citation attached, so you can add the reference before it becomes someone else's judgement call. If you want a broader check on your draft before submitting, Assignment Review covers structure and argument as well.

Does it check formatting beyond the references?

It focuses on citations and the reference list, in-text format, entry structure, hanging indents, capitalisation, italics, DOI and URL formatting, author ordering and alphabetisation. Page layout, margins, line spacing and title-page requirements are your institution's own template rather than a citation style, so check those against your course handbook. For feedback on the writing itself, argument, structure, clarity, Assignment Review is the one built for that.
