## Organize, Reference, and Professionalize Your Files.

Add page numbers to help readers navigate longer PDFs and reference a specific page during a review.

- **Format Academic Theses**: Meet strict university formatting guidelines. Easily skip your title page and start your numbering sequence exactly where your first chapter begins.
- **Organize Legal Exhibits**: Add sequential page numbers to an evidence binder so your legal team can reference the same pages during review. Check the required numbering format.
- **Unify Merged Reports**: When combining multiple files into one master PDF, apply a fresh, overarching 'Page 1 of X' sequence to visually tie the entire document together.
- **Prepare for Publishing**: Add page numbers to a manuscript before printing. Choose the position and appearance, then check the layout alongside your binding requirements.
- **Build Tables of Contents**: Number the pages in employee manuals and technical guides so readers can follow references and find the sections listed in your contents page.
- **Simplify Team Reviews**: Stop telling colleagues to 'scroll down a bit.' Add clear, bold page numbers to draft proposals so your team can leave precise, page-specific feedback.

## How adding page numbers works

FynePDF draws each number into the page itself rather than adding it as an annotation, so it prints, shares and displays identically everywhere. The preview updates as you change settings, which means you can see exactly where every number lands before anything is applied to your file.

- **Position and style**: Choose a corner or centre, top or bottom, then set the font, size, colour and opacity to suit the page.
- **Where numbering starts**: Skip the cover page and begin on page two, or set any starting number so it matches the rest of your document.
- **Choose your format**: Show just the number, or 'Page 1', '1 of n' or 'Page 1 of n' depending on how formal the document needs to look.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I customize the page number format, position, and starting number?

Yes. Choose where the number sits corner or centre, top or bottom and set the font, size, colour and opacity. Four formats are available: just the number, "Page 1", "1 of n" and "Page 1 of n". You can start the sequence at any number rather than 1, and skip the cover page so numbering begins on page two. The preview updates live, so you can see exactly how it looks before applying.

### Will numbering overwrite existing content on the page?

The number is drawn into the page's margin area, so on most documents it sits clear of the content. Because the preview updates live, you can check every page before applying and move the number to a different corner if it clashes with a footer, logo or existing numbering. Nothing is written to your file until you apply.

### Is the Add Page Numbers tool free to use online?

Yes, FynePDF's Add Page Numbers tool is free with no sign-up required. Free accounts number files up to 600MB, with 5 tasks and 600MB of processing a day. Professional at $7/month raises this to 5GB with unlimited daily tasks.

### Is it safe to add page numbers on FynePDF? Are my files secure?

File transfers use TLS encryption. Cloud-processed files are automatically deleted within 15 minutes after processing completes, unless you choose to save them to your Library. Documents are not used to train AI models. Read the Privacy Policy for storage and processing details.

### Can I use the Add Page Numbers tool on Mac, Windows, or mobile?

Yes. FynePDF's Add Page Numbers tool works directly from your browser, so it works on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android with no installation. Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge are all supported.

### How do I skip the cover page when adding page numbers?

Tick "Skip Cover Page" and numbering begins on page two, leaving your title page clean. The sequence starts at 2 by default, so your cover is counted but not printed, which is what most university thesis guidelines require, and it keeps the last page reading "Page 12 of 12" rather than "Page 11 of 12". If you'd rather the second page be number 1, set the starting number manually.

### Can I start page numbers at a number other than 1?

Yes. Set any starting number and the sequence runs from there. This is what you need when a document is one part of a larger set, a chapter beginning at page 47, an appendix continuing from the main report, or a section that will be bound into a longer volume.

### Can I use Roman numerals or letters instead of numbers?

Not currently. FynePDF numbers pages using standard numerals in five formats, including "Page 1 of n" and "1 of n". Roman numerals for front matter are a common request and are on the roadmap. For now, one approach is to split the document, number each section separately with its own starting number, and merge them back together.

### Does the "of n" total include pages I've skipped?

Yes. The total counts every page in your file, including a skipped cover. When Skip Cover Page is ticked, numbering starts at 2 on the second page, so a 12-page document runs from "Page 2 of 12" through to "Page 12 of 12", the cover is counted but not printed, which is the convention most thesis and report guidelines expect. If you'd rather the second page read "Page 1", set the starting number to 1 manually.
